Herman Clayton Davis

Mr. Herman Clayton Davis, age 86 of Coalfield passed away Wednesday March 4, 2015 at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was born in Coalfield on July 7, 1929 to the late Alva and Edith Davis. Clayton graduated from Coalfield School and lived most of his life in the community. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. In 1989 Clayton retired from the Tennessee Department of Corrections after more than 30 years of service. During his tenure, he served as Warden of Brushy Mountain Prison, Fort Pillow Prison in West Tennessee as well as the Morgan County Regional Correctional Facility in Wartburg. Clayton was an avid lover of horses. He trained and showed them well into his seventies. He also enjoyed sports and was a fan of the Coalfield Yellow Jackets and the Wartburg Lady Bulldogs. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years: Ramona Patterson Davis. Two brothers and one sister-in-law: Calvin and Bobbie Davis and Alvin Davis. And one brother-in-law: Tommy Woods. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law: Mike and Rhonda Davis of Wartburg. One grandson: Jason Davis and his wife Renee of Rockwood. One great grandson: Cannon Davis. One brother and sister-in-law: Jackson and Lois Davis of Mossy Grove. Two sisters and one brother-in-law: Billie Woods and Gayle and Doug Gray all of Coalfield. A special friend: Dawn Davis as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other friends and loved ones. The family will receive friends Sunday March 8, 2015 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Davis Funeral Home, Wartburg. Funeral services will follow at 5:00 PM with Rev. Kevin Ward officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11:00 AM Monday in Davis Cemetery in Coalfield for graveside services.
