Mr. Clayton Eugene Mathis, age 88 of Kingston, passed away Monday July 6, 2015 at his home. Clayton was born October 17, 1926 in Akron, Ohio. His family moved to Mossy Grove before he was three years old until 1936 when the family moved to Harriman. He graduated from Harriman High School in 1944. Later that year, he joined the Navy and completed his training as an Electronic Technician Mate in 1945. He was assigned to the USS Denver (CL-58) where he served until it was decommissioned in July 1946. Clayton was a Life Member of the VFW and also a member of the American Legion. He started working with Union Carbide at K-25 in 1952 as an Instrument Mechanic and continued working in various capacities until 1988. He retired from Martin Marietta at their Y-12 Plant as a Computing and Telecommunications Dept. Engineer with 36 years of company service. In 1952, he married Mary Emma Hensley and together they had three children; David, Karen and Gary. He was preceded in death by his parents: John M. and Jessie Lee Whaley Mathis. One brother: John Dale Mathis. One sister: Lola Ruth Farr. One son: David Michael Mathis. And one daughter: Karen Mathis. He is survived by his one son: Gary S. Mathis of Kingston. One daughter: Candice R. Smith of Harriman. And several other family, friends and loved ones. The family will receive friends Sunday July 12, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Davis Funeral Home, Harriman. A private Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kingston First Baptist Church Building Fund.
