Billie Hale

November 28, 1921 — July 17, 2012

Ms. Billie Cox Hale, born, November 28, 1921 in Sweetwater, TN, went to Heaven peacefully on July 17, 2012 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. She was a member of the Christian Church in Harriman. She was a well-known historian and genealogist, and she formerly wrote a column on residents of South Harriman for the Roane Reader. She also contributed many articles for the Histories of Roane County, Loudon County, and Monroe County. She was a sixth generation East Tennessean and thirteenth generation Southerner. She had three ancestral lines in Jamestown, Virginia, in the early 1600's. She was a proud member of The First Families of Tennessee and the United Daughters of the Confederacy Knoxville Chapter #89. She served as corresponding secretary for Chapter #89 until her death. She was also a supporter of the Civil War Preservation Association and the North Shore Animal League. Her love of history and heritage remained strong until the end of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents: William Gaines Cox
and Minnie Ethel Wyrick Cox.
And one brother: Sam L. Cox.
She is survived by one daughter: Namuni Dee Hale Young
and husband Harvey F. Young Jr.
Two granddaughters: Whitney Namuni Young,
and Holly Amanda Young Williams
and husband Ty Bennett Williams.
And two great-grandchildren: Driskill Amanda Williams
and Franklin Bennett Williams, all of Knoxville.
She is also survived by several cousins, friends, and her beloved dog, Chloe.
The family will receive friends Thursday July 19, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the chapel of Davis Funeral Home, Harriman. Graveside services will be held Friday July 20, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Fenders Cemetery, Sweetwater, TN, with Pastor Jeff Smith officiating.
